NDC’s Sammy Gyamfi Sues Asaase Radio and ABC News for Defamation
The National Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has taken legal action against Asaase Radio and ABC News, seeking damages of GHC10 million for defamation over a publication that alleged he used party funds to finance a lavish trip to Miami with his wife.
The publication, which went viral on social media, claimed that Mr. Gyamfi and his wife were staying at the 5-star Betsy Hotel in Miami for two weeks, with a daily bill of US$3000, totaling US$42,000.
The article also quoted an NDC activist as saying that Mr. Gyamfi was spending party funds meant for communication outfits on himself and his wife, rather than using them to defend Mahama and the party’s policies.
Mr. Gyamfi has denied the allegations, calling them “baseless and defamatory”. His lawyer has stated that the article was designed to tarnish his reputation and undermine his authority within the NDC.
In his suit, Mr. Gyamfi is seeking GHC10 million in damages from Asaase Radio and ABC News for the harm caused by the publication.
The allegations have heated up debates on social media, with some NDC supporters coming to Mr. Gyamfi’s defense, while others have called for his resignation or further investigation into the matter.

The NDC leadership has also been drawn into the controversy, with some members calling for an inquiry into the use of party funds.
The Betsy Hotel in Miami, where Mr. Gyamfi allegedly stayed with his wife, is described as a luxurious property offering top-notch facilities, including a fitness center, snack bar, sun terrace, and concierge service.
Guests can enjoy board games or puzzles with their children or unwind at the rooftop pool or spa facilities.
The incident emphasizes the importance of fact-checking and verifying information before publication, especially in the digital age where false news can spread quickly and cause significant harm to individuals’ reputations. It also raises questions about the use of party funds and accountability within political parties.
As the case unfolds, it remains to be seen how Asaase Radio and ABC News will respond to Mr. Gyamfi’s lawsuit and whether they will provide evidence to support their claims. In the meantime, Mr. Gyamfi’s reputation is on the line, and his integrity is being tested by the allegations made against him.
