NDC continues to be visionless after all these years being in opposition – Afenyo Markin
In a recent declaration on the floor of parliament, Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo Markin delivered a biting critique of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), labeling the party as “visionless” under its current leadership.
The focus of his criticism was the potential return of a John Dramani Mahama-led government, which he believes would be doomed to failure from its inception.
Afenyo Markin’s critique didn’t just stop at the leadership; it extended to the strategic decisions made by the NDC, particularly the selection of the vice-presidential candidate.
He argued that choosing a running mate who is over 70 years old demonstrates a lack of succession planning and foresight, essential for a country’s future development.
According to him, this choice reflects poorly on the NDC’s ability to govern with a long-term vision for Ghana.
The Majority Leader also highlighted what he perceives as a lack of urgency and motivation in a potential Mahama government.
Given that Mahama has only one term left constitutionally, Afenyo Markin suggests that the former president might not have the drive to implement significant changes or policies, as he has “nothing to lose.”
This, in Afenyo Markin’s view, would result in a government that is not only lacking in vision but also in crisis from day one.
The selection of a running mate with a background in education, who Afenyo Markin claims underperformed both as Vice-Chancellor at the University of Cape Coast and as Minister of Education, is seen as further evidence of the NDC’s flawed vision.

The completion of the E-blocks, a project aimed at expanding access to secondary education, is cited as a failure under the running mate’s tenure, casting doubt on her ability to contribute to the country’s future.
Afenyo Markin contrasts this with the approach of his own party, suggesting that they have nominated a flagbearer who “represents the future of Ghana.”
This comparison is meant to highlight what he sees as the NDC’s inability to provide a leadership team that can ensure the country’s progress and long-term benefit.
This strong stance taken by the Majority Leader on the floor of parliament reflects the deep political divides in Ghana and underscores the intense scrutiny under which political parties and their leaders are placed.
As Ghana continues to navigate its political future, the debate over vision, leadership, and the capacity to govern effectively remains central to the discourse.
