Metro Mass set to get over 350 new buses in February 2026

Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL) says they are set to receive more than 350 new buses by the first week of February in other to expand services and to help relieve pressure on Accra’s busy intra-city routes.
As per Mohammed Mubarak Watara, who is the Head of Communications at MMTL, these buses are included in a government procurement initiative which is also aimed at the stabilization of the public transport, especially when there is peak periods. This noramally makes the commuters face long waiting times and congestion.
The Minister of Transport sent his deputy Dorcas Affo-Toffey to Egypt in December 2025 to personally inspect the ISUZU buses being procured for the MMTL.
Speaking in a radio interview with Accra based Citi FM on Thursday [January 15, 2026], Mr Mohammed Mubarak Watara said Metro Mass had changed how it operates so that they can prioritise intra-city movement, regardless operating with some imporatant reduced fleet.
He drew to attention that some intercity services had been reduced to allow buses to be relocated to busy Accra areas, like Adenta to Accra, Kaneshie to Kasoa, Circle to Amasaman and Nsawam.
Mr. Mohammed Mubarak Watara stated that “At the moment our fleet is low, but we have adjusted to what the minister directed.” He added that “the operating hours on selected routes had been extended to meet demand at peak times.”
Mr. Mohammed Mubarak Watara highlighted that Metro Mass operates about 115 buses nationwide currently and this is far below the number needed to serve all designated routes. Due to that, the company has been forced to prioritize intra-city services at the expense of some long-distance operations.
Mr. Mohammed Mubarak Watara again said “The managing director and the Deputy Minister went for the final inspection last month. There were a few things that needed to be added, which is why the buses have not arrived yet.” In the view of Mr. Mohammed Mubarak Watara, the first batch of buses is set to arrive by the end of January or, by the first week of February, at the latest.
