Mahama joins Dutch Passport vs Gh PHD debate
Ghana’s former President, John Mahama, has joined the ongoing debate on whether a Dutch passport is better than a PhD in Ghana.
Speaking at a public lecture organized by the Christian Service University in Kumasi, Mahama expressed his thoughts on the matter, citing economic mismanagement by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government as the root cause of the debate.
“There’s widespread despair and anguish amongst our people leading to an active debate on social media about whether securing a foreign passport to do a menial job in Europe is better than holding a PhD in Ghana.
It’s the adversity into which our nation has been plunged, otherwise, there’s no basis for comparison between a Visa and a PHD,” he said.
Mahama emphasized that the focus should be on restoring hope and confidence in the country’s future through better governance and efficient use of resources.
“Those whose glaring failures at economic management have sucked us into this vortex of despair despite their lofty talk in opposition and who now seek to flee the responsibility cannot be rewarded with the presidency in this deep crisis.”
He also stressed that leadership that is honest and accepts responsibility for challenges rather than passing the buck is essential for sustaining democracy.
“Leadership that is honest and accepts responsibility for challenges rather than passing the buck is the kind of leadership that sustains democracy.”
Mahama’s comments come as many Ghanaians have taken to social media to express their frustration with the status-quo of the country, with some arguing that securing a foreign passport offers better prospects for economic stability and security than staying in Ghana.

The debate has raised concerns about the erosion of confidence in Ghana’s future and the impact it may have on the country’s development.
Mahama’s remarks reminds us of the consequences of poor leadership and economic mismanagement, emphasizing the need for accountability and transparency in governance.
“It’s not about comparing a Visa and a PhD, it’s about finding solutions to our problems. We need to focus on creating an environment where our people can thrive, not just survive,” he added.
Mahama concluded by saying that those who have failed to manage the economy should not be rewarded with the presidency, but instead, leaders who are honest and accept responsibility for challenges should be given a chance to lead.
