Following retirement, he assumed leadership at Belgian team Anderlecht for a span of three years before making a move to Burnley in 2022. During his debut season as manager, the ex-defender guided the club to victory in the Championship, earning them a promotion to the Premier League. Unfortunately, their stay in the top tier was short-lived as they were relegated back to the second division after finishing 19th in the 2023-24 season.

After facing multiple rejections from several coaches, Bayern Munich finally seem to be approaching the end of their protracted search for Thomas Tuchel’s successor.
