Hopeson Adorye faces GH₵1 million defamation suit
Hopeson Kofivi Adorye, Operations Director of Movement for Change, faces a defamation law suit filed by Alex Kwaku Tetteh, the convener of Citizen Eye Ghana, a non-governmental organization.
Tetteh is demanding GH₵1 million in damages, along with a retraction and apology from Adorye.
The dispute arose from statements Adorye allegedly made during a call-in segment of the morning show “Ade Akye Abia” on Okay FM on May 7, 2024.
During the broadcast, Adorye reportedly said, “… When he (referring to Tetteh) drinks Akpeteshie (a local gin) and smokes ‘wee’ in addition, he speaks total rubbish as if he speaks from his anus.”
Tetteh asserts that these remarks were defamatory, suggesting he is a drug addict, criminal, unintelligent, and an alcoholic.
Tetteh claims the defamatory statements have caused serious damage to his reputation, bringing him public scandal, disrepute, odium, and contempt.
He emphasizes that the false pronouncement by Adorye was not only broadcast live but also streamed on multiple social media platforms associated with Okay FM, further amplifying the issue’s publicity.
In his suit, Tetteh seeks a prominent retraction and apology from Adorye, which he demands be aired on Okay FM and published on the station’s website and social media platforms.
He also insists that the retraction and apology be printed on the front or back page of the Daily Graphic Newspaper for three consecutive days.
Furthermore, Tetteh is asking for “exemplary damages” and a perpetual injunction to restrain Adorye and his agents from making or publishing further defamatory statements about him.
He argues that without such legal restraint, Adorye is likely to continue making similar harmful pronouncements.
The case underscores the broader issue of defamatory statements in the media and the significant impact such remarks can have on an individual’s reputation and social standing.
By seeking such comprehensive redress, Tetteh aims to mitigate the damage done to his character and prevent further defamatory actions by Adorye.
The outcome of this lawsuit could have implications for media practices and political discourse in Ghana, potentially setting a precedent for how defamatory statements are handled legally and socially.
As the case proceeds, it will be closely watched by both legal experts and the public, given its potential to influence future conduct in both political and media circles.
