Hopeson Adorye’s arrest is politically motivated – Buaben Asamoa
Former Member of Parliament for the Adentan seat, Yaw Buaben Asamoa, has blasted the Ghana Police Service for arresting Hopeson Adorye.
He said that the arrest of Mr. Hopeson Adorye, a member of the Movement for Change, was politically motivated.
Mr. Buaben Asamoa intimated that the police are awaiting instructions from above, hinting that the arrest was not exclusively a police decision.
“Because if Hopson Adorye has been up and running and there are people who are feeling a little edgy and Jiffy about some of the things he has been saying. And this is the way of muscling him, trying to frighten the movement for change, it won’t work. I believe strongly that it’s politically motivated.”
Police detained Hopeson Adorye, a major member of the Movement for Change, after he claimed to have detonated dynamites in the Volta Region during the 2016 General Elections.
Mr. Hopeson Adorye made the remark during a radio broadcast in Accra, and it has since gone viral.
“Prior to the elections, we blasted dynamite in parts of the Volta Region, and that scared a number of people,” Hopeson Adorye said. He further claimed that this tactic led to a significant decrease in voter turnout, ultimately benefiting the NPP.
“After casting my ballot in Tema, I drove to the Volta Region,” Adorye continued. “When I asked for the number of people who had voted and the expected number of voters, it turned out people did not come out to vote.”
The charges sparked widespread censure from the public and important figures alike. Broadcaster Kwame Sefa Kayi, host of Peace FM’s Kokrokoo show, was among those demanding for Adorye’s immediate arrest and a full inquiry into his allegations.
According to reports, Adorye is now in detention and is scheduled to appear in court in the coming days.
During the Accra FM interview, Hopeson Adorye disclosed that around 2 p.m. on election day, the Volta Region’s turnout was noticeably low, which he interpreted as an indication of decreased support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in their heartland.
