When we say Hajj, what is all about?
Hajj is the annual Islamic pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia, considered one of the most sacred acts of worship in Islam. It is a mandatory pilgrimage for Muslims who are physically and financially able to make the trip. Here’s an overview of what Hajj is all about:
Purpose
The primary purpose of Hajj is to visit the Kaaba, a cube-shaped building in the heart of Mecca, which is considered the holiest site in Islam. The pilgrimage is a way for Muslims to fulfill their spiritual obligations, seek forgiveness, and cleanse their souls.
Timing
Hajj takes place over five days in the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah, which typically falls in August or September. The pilgrimage is expected to be performed during the first 10 days of this month.
Rites and Rituals
The Hajj pilgrimage involves a series of rites and rituals, which are performed over five days. Some of the key rituals include:
1. Tawaf: Circling the Kaaba seven times, walking counterclockwise.
2. Sa’y: Running between two hills, Safa and Marwah, to commemorate Hagar’s search for water.
3. Stoning the Devil:Throwing pebbles at three pillars in Mina, which represents the rejection of Satan’s temptations.
4. Arafah: Standing on Mount Arafah, where Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) delivered his famous sermon.
5. Mina:Spending a day in Mina, where pilgrims stay in tents and perform the stoning ritual.
