The Ghana Police Service and the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to recruit and train 12,000 young people to support the police in community policing efforts.
These new positions are part of President Akufo-Addo’s plans to roll out a 24-hour economy and are expected to directly improve the lives of many young Ghanaians. The initiative will also ease the workload of the police service and improve local security.
At the signing ceremony, Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, said the programme will help boost police operations and keep communities safer. He praised the collaboration and assured that the Interior Ministry is committed to strengthening it.
Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, said the new recruits will receive training in basic policing and intelligence gathering before being assigned to police stations across the country. “Our police service lacks enough personnel,” said YEA CEO, Malik Basintale. “These community assistants will rely on their knowledge of the areas they live in to support regular officers, helping to improve security without overstretching the existing staff.”
Basintale added that youth unemployment remains a serious concern, noting that 2023 data from the Ghana Statistical Service shows unemployment among 15- to 24-year-olds at 32.8%. “This will keep 12,000 young people engaged in productive work and away from criminal influences such as robbery and drug abuse,” he said.
He also stated that the community policing roles will last for an initial two years, with the possibility of permanent jobs based on performance and availability.
“This programme offers thousands of young people a way to earn income while contributing to safer neighbourhoods,” Basintale said. “Globally, 1.8 billion young people are jobless. My daily task is to create opportunities for the youth of Ghana.”
Applicants can submit their forms via the YEA online portal at [apply.yea.gov.gh](http://apply.yea.gov.gh). Recruitment is expected to begin soon.
