Ghana at 63: “Consolidating Our Gains”
Ghana at 63 is a big achievement in the history of the country. The theme of the 2020 edition of our independence celebration “Consolidating Our Gains” is timely and worth the occasion.
We have come far as a nation, our successes in our democratic governance have become the benchmark in Africa but economic independence struggle must continue unabated while we improve on our political credentials.
Our challenges in all spheres of nationhood must not derail our efforts to reach our dreamed heights as an independent and prosperous nation that rocks shoulders with the so-called developed nations.
As a country, we must use our gains and success of the past and present as the bedrock upon which we shall build and climb up the ladder of development and make our nation great and strong in the midst of present challenges.

Ghana at 63 is the envy of the world, we are the eye of Africa, we are the nation that gives hope to others struggling to attain our feet. We must, therefore, move away from all the unpatriotic acts, attitudes, decisions, corruption, abuse of power, petty quarrels, misuse of our scare resources, self-seeking interest, lack of strategic thinking and leadership and use of our resources and deal with poverty, diseases, challenges in health in general and education. Our trade and industrialization struggle must be our focal point so that we can as a nation give Ghana, Ghanaians, and the posterity of this nation real hope to consolidate our gains.
The BLACK STAR in our flag stands for the lodestar of African freedom and we must continue to champion this from within as a nation and avoid all manner of oppression of the ordinary people, organizations and political opponents.
In 1957, when Ghana gained independence, The prime minister and first president of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah said :
“From today, we must change our attitudes and our minds. That new Africa is ready to fight his own battles and show that after all the black man is capable of managing his own affairs. We are going to demonstrate to the world, to the other nations, that we are prepared to lay our foundation – our own African personality.”
Today, Ghana must consolidate its gains and strive to achieve as a united front and force to make Ghana a haven for all Ghanaians.
In 1957 Queen of England’s message to Ghana on the day of independence included
“The hopes of many, especially in Africa, hang on your endeavours. It is my earnest and confident belief that my people in Ghana will go forward in freedom and justice.”
In reply, Dr Nkrumah said:
“My government fully realize both the advantages and the responsibilities involved in the achievement of independence. It intends to make full use of these advantages to increase the prosperity of the country.”
Consolidating Our Gains as a nation, Ghana at 63 must focus on the advantages of being an independent state and a country that has become a beacon of democracy, we must harness Ghana’s resources for the benefit of the ordinary people and use these resources to advance the dreams of the torch bearers of this nation to ensure, we realize our dreams and aspirations.
Being the first nation sub of the Sahara to gain independence, Ghana continues to evolve and lead in Africa as the preferred destination for business, culture, and tourism. Let us hold on to what we have, let us guard our peace with all our might and transform the fortunes of this nation without any conflict of interest.
Dr Nkrumah’s words “We have awakened. We will not sleep anymore. Today, from now on, there is a new African in the world!” must ring a bell in our hearts and minds. Ghana at 63 is no mean achievement, our challenges cracked us, but never broke us, lets build useful bridges between the past, present and the future of this nation and not walls that divide us, political conflicts must not be allowd to ruin our gains nor steal from us the common and mind we must have so that our efforts at “Consolidating Our Gains” will lead to goal congrunence.
Ayikoooo to us all as we mark 63 years of nationhood. Let the red, gold and green flag with the black star of Africa remind us of our greatness as a nation.
God make our nation great and strong as we celebrate Ghana at 63.
