Federation of Kumasi Traders threaten to sue Kejetia management, Fire Service

The head of the Federation of Kumasi Traders Association, Nana Prempeh, is poised to sue both the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and the management of the Kejetia Market in Kumasi.
This bold move stems from serious concerns that the market has been operating without essential legal safeguards, specifically a fire certificate and insurance coverage, in direct violation of Legal Instrument (LI) 1724.
In a revealing discussion with Kojo Marfo on the program AbusuaNkommo, Nana Prempeh voiced his dismay over the market’s operation under such precarious conditions.
“As a trader myself, I am compelled to sue the GNFS and the management of Kumasi City Market. It’s well-known that the GNFS is tasked with shutting down any commercial premises lacking a fire certificate and insurance. I intend to challenge this in court,” he asserted.
Prempeh further disclosed that he possesses proof indicating that since November 2021, the Kejetia Market has been devoid of any insurance cover.
This is despite clear directives from the National Insurance Commission mandating insurance for all commercial entities.
“The fact that there’s even a fire post at the market doesn’t compensate for the lack of a fire certificate,” Prempeh explained, underscoring the gravity of the risk to traders operating there.

He expressed serious concerns about the structural integrity and safety standards of the market, questioning the longevity of the facility built on a potentially unstable, waterlogged site with questionable construction methods.
These issues were highlighted following a devastating fire in March 2023 that ravaged parts of the market.
The aftermath revealed that lapses in renewing insurance were partly due to the absence of a fire certificate, exacerbating the losses suffered by traders.
The planned lawsuit by Nana Prempeh is not only a test of the law but also a critical call for accountability and improved safety standards at one of Kumasi’s central commercial hubs.
