EU confident Ghana will not assent anti-LGBTQI Bill
In a significant address to the European Parliament on April 24, 2024, Virginijus Sinkevičius, the European Commissioner for Environment, Oceans, and Fisheries, spoke optimistically about the future of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Act in Ghana, more colloquially known as the anti-LGBTQI bill.
Representing High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell, Sinkevičius underscored Ghana’s established reputation as a bastion of democracy and a stabilizing force in West Africa, particularly highlighting its progressive stance on human rights, such as its recent move towards abolishing the death penalty.
Despite the strides Ghana has made, the anti-LGBTQI Bill presents a significant challenge in the realm of protecting sexual minorities.
The anti LGBTQ bill, having passed through Parliament, now faces judicial scrutiny for its constitutionality and is yet to receive presidential assent.
Sinkevičius conveyed the EU’s concerns regarding the bill’s alignment with Ghana’s own constitutional commitments to human rights, hinting at potential adverse impacts, including financial repercussions.
