Court remands commercial sex worker over human trafficking

Police are holding a commercial sex worker because a court in Accra thinks she was involved in human trafficking.

Miriam Braim pleaded not guilty to both trying to sell people as slaves and marketing people as slaves.
The next time we’ll see her is on November 29, 2022. Mary, the only name given to her partner, is on the run.

Police Chief Inspector Isaac Anquandah told the court, which was led by Madam Kizita Naa Koowa Quarshie, that the accuser, Miriam, was a commercial sex worker and the complainant was a casual worker.

He said that both the complainant and the accused were Nigerians who lived in Ghana and that the accused and Mary, a friend of the accused living in Nigeria at the time, went to Ghana in December 2021 to get into prostitution.

The prosecution said that after they lived together for three months in Kasoa, Ghana, they had a fight and went their separate ways. Mary went back to Nigeria, and Miriam stayed in Ghana and moved to Mempeasem in East Legon.

It said that Mary in Nigeria allegedly found and brought the victim, Mutia Osman, to Ghana. It also said that the accused person met her there on October 1, 2022, and took her home.

The court heard that the accused tried to use the victim as a prostitute, but the victim told the accused that she was only 18 and had never been with a man before. The accused allegedly ignored the victim’s plea.

The prosecution said that the accused person spent two days with the victim and had commercial sex with her.

It said that on the second day of their trip, the victim felt unsafe and jumped into a private car, which took her to the East Legon Police Station, where she filed a complaint.

The prosecution said that on October 7, 22, the police took the victim to the home of the accused and arrested her there.

After that, the case was sent to the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit at Headquarters, where the accused was brought to court after an investigation.
