Newsghana24 can confirm that the flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has consulted President Nana Akufo-Addo on his choice of a running mate which is Opoku Prempeh for the upcoming December 7 presidential election.
The consultation took place during a private meeting last night at the Jubilee House, the official residence and office of the President of Ghana.
According to JoyNews’ Presidential Affairs correspondent Elton Brobbey, the meeting was a significant moment in the NPP’s preparations for the election.
During the discussion, Vice President Dr. Bawumia formally presented his preferred candidate for the vice-presidential slot to President Akufo-Addo.
Brobbey reported that President Akufo-Addo listened attentively to Dr. Bawumia’s rationale for his choice and offered his advice and perspectives on the decision.
Ultimately, the President endorsed Dr. Bawumia’s selection, recognizing the strategic importance of unity and strength within the party as they head into the election.
Elton Brobbey provided details about the chosen candidate, describing him as a 56-year-old medical doctor with a distinguished academic and professional background.
The candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, is an alumnus of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), where he earned his medical degree.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh has a long-standing career in politics, having been first elected to Parliament in 2008.
He has successfully won re-election in subsequent elections in 2012, 2016, and 2020, reflecting his enduring popularity and effectiveness as a legislator.
Throughout his tenure in Parliament, Dr. Opoku Prempeh has served on several key committees, including the Health, Appointment, and Defence and Interior Committees, contributing to important legislative processes and decisions.
His political career reached a significant milestone in 2017 when President Akufo-Addo appointed him as the Minister of Education.
In this role, Dr. Opoku Prempeh implemented various reforms and initiatives aimed at improving the education sector in Ghana.

The survey, which engaged 5,116 NPP delegates nationwide, including national, regional, constituency, and polling station executives, indicated strong support for Dr. Opoku Prempeh as the preferred running mate.
According to the survey results, Dr. Opoku Prempeh secured an impressive 76.2% of the responses from the executives polled.
The survey also highlighted the Minister of Education and MP for Bosomtwe, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, as the second most favored candidate, garnering 10.16% of the responses.
