BECE Candidates Excited: No Cut-Off Point for SHS- GES
BECE Candidates went nuts when news broke out that there will not be a Cut-Off Point for entry into SHS as published earlier by some online news portals.
The earlier publication was based on a Press Statement purported to have emanated from the Ghana Education Service.
That news item did not make many 2019 BECE candidates happy but the general public saw it as a good move to help make students more serious with their books. Newsghana24.com upon a publication that the cut off point for BECE has been moved to aggregate 25 received several calls from BECE candidates and some parents who expressed mixed feelings. While some welcomed the news, others like candidates did not. Now that the Ghana Education Service has cleared the air on the matter, candidates have briefed a sigh of relief.
The news about the “No cut-off point” for Senior High School was made known by Prof. Kwesi Amankwa. He indicated that, the Standard 9 System was still in full force and that students output thus raw scores will be used to place students in their schools of choice
Prof. Kwesi Opoku Amankwa, the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service revealed this during a Starr FM interview on the Morning show “Time with the CEO” on Monday, April 15, 2019.
According to him the Standard 9 System gives students weak passes but does not fail them. He added that school placement is a competitive venture that takes into account the school choices of the candidate and his or her raw scores.
Candidates who fail to make the need raw scores and do not get the opportunity to further their education at the SHS level are given a second chance to re-sit the BECE as private candidates or in their schools.
It is important for parents and candidates for the 2019 BECE to know that the fact that there is no cut-off point does not mean they should not take their books preparation towards the June Examination serious. Without working hard and taking their lessons and preparation toward the examination serious, they are likely not to make the grades that will help them be placed in their schools of choice.
