According to local authorities, the incident took place while Jooste was on a walk, a few moments away from his residence.

The controversy reached a climax when he was slapped with a substantial fine by the Financial Sector Conduct Authority for his involvement in disseminating false financial statements, which precipitated the near-collapse of Steinhoff in 2017 due to severe accounting discrepancies.

Colonel Andre Traut, a police spokesperson, provided a timeline of the events, noting that Jooste suffered the gunshot wound in the late afternoon and succumbed to his injuries en route to the hospital.
