Vice Chancellor of KNUST’s re-appointment illegal; one files injunction in court
Re-Appointment of KNUST Vice Chancellor Deemed Illegal, Injunction Filed in Court
Prof. Mrs. Rita Akosua Dickson’s re-appointment as KNUST ’s vice Chancellor has come not just with congratulatory messages but backlash from some stakeholders.
Her re-appointment could affect her as a court injunction has been filed against her.
Kofi Clement Ohene Asare, a proud alumnus of KNUST has filed an interlocutory injunction with the aim of canceling the vice Chancellor’s re-appointment which is expected to begin on August 1, 2024.
The alumnus highlighted certain breaches of the University’s statutes in the reappointment of the vice Chancellor spearheaded by former Chief Justice, Kwasi Anin-Yeboah, who holds the position of the Chairperson in KNUST’s Council.
Kofi Clement Ohene Asare disclosed that if the university is to appoint a vice Chancellor, a seven-member Search Committee must be assigned to propose a good candidate and also advertise the office of the vice Chancellor as vacant to give chance for viable candidates to apply.
According to Kofi Clement Ohene Asare, these guidelines were not followed before Mrs. Rita Dickson’s second term appointment.
In the injunction application, Mr. Ohene Asare described as “unlawful”, “illegal”, and “unconscionable” the conduct of the university and the governing council in the renewal of the appointment of the vice Chancellor.
The alumnus lamented that despite the wrongful act by the university council, the former Chief Justice, Kwasi Anin-Yeboah, and Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson are bent on proceeding to act on the purported renewed second term appointment, prompting his immediate application for the injunction.
The hearing of this case would be at Kumasi High Court on 30th July 2024.
