UFO Demands Urgent Action to Protect Students in Conflict-Affected Areas Ahead of WASSCE

The Universal Friendship Organisation (UFO) has called on the Government of Ghana to take immediate steps to support students in conflict-affected areas as they prepare to sit for the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates.

According to the organisation, tensions in communities such as Bawku, Zuarungu, Nkwanta South, and Nalerigu in the North East Region pose a serious threat to the safety and academic performance of candidates scheduled to write their exams from August 5 to September 19, 2025.

A total of 461,640 final-year Senior High School students are expected to take part in this year’s examination.

In a press release, UFO urged the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to act swiftly to safeguard the wellbeing of students in these areas.

Key Recommendations

UFO outlined three key measures for government consideration:

1. Counselling Support: The organisation recommended that trained counsellors be deployed to affected schools to provide psychological support to students grappling with trauma and anxiety due to the ongoing tensions.

2. Safe Accommodation: UFO called on the government to provide secure and conducive lodging for candidates, ensuring they have a stable environment to study and prepare for their exams.

3. Peaceful Environment: The organisation also appealed to security agencies deployed to examination centres to maintain a calm and student-friendly atmosphere that allows for focus and concentration.

“We believe these interventions are crucial in ensuring that students are not further disadvantaged by their circumstances. Mental health, safety, and a supportive environment are key to academic success,” the statement read.

Appeal to Parents

UFO also appealed to parents to remain calm and offer encouragement to their wards during this critical period. “With the right support and conditions, our students will excel,” the organisation assured.
