There is nothing wrong with Bawumia Receiving Prayers-Sheikh Aremeyaw Shuaib
National Chief Imam’s Spokesperson Defends Dr. Bawumia of getting Prayers with Pastors
In a recent interview on GHOne TV’s State of Affairs show, the spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shuaib, has clarified that there is no issue with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flag bearer, receiving prayers from Pastors.
The controversy arose after several pictures emerged on social and traditional media showing the Vice President visiting churches during his campaign, where Pastors would lay their hands on him and pray for his success.
Many critics have accused Dr. Bawumia of religious duplicity, claiming that a Muslim cannot accept prayers from other faiths.
However, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shuaib disagrees. According to him, Muslims can participate in interfaith activities without compromising their beliefs.

He shared a personal experience where he attended an anniversary celebration at the Catholic Church alongside the Chief Imam, and also gave lectures at a Presbyterian Church.
“I enter the Presbyterian Church and give lectures. It doesn’t make me less of a Muslim. There’s a way to describe practicing the faith. For example, if I go and behave like every Christian, inside me, I’m a Christian, though I say I’m a Muslim.
That would mean compromising my faith, and then there is something wrong,” he explained.
Sheikh Aremeyaw Shuaib emphasized that these interfaith engagements are symbolic and not meant to be taken literally. He also highlighted that priests often visit the Chief Imam’s residence and pray for him, which is seen as a gesture of friendship and respect.
The spokesperson noted that Dr. Bawumia’s actions should be viewed as part of his political strategy to garner support from all corners of society.
“He is a politician. He is using political tactics. Dr. Bawumia knows that even if all Muslims vote for him, he will not win an election. Politically, it doesn’t make sense to be on one side,” he said.
Sheikh Aremeyaw Shuaib further pointed out that all politicians engage in similar acts, visiting spiritual leaders from different faiths to seek blessings and prayers.
“All the politicians do this. They come to Muslims. Some of them come to the Chief Imam for him to pray for them. The Chief Imam lays his hands on the heads of politicians. When they come, they squat and give their heads to the Chief Imam to pray for them. It’s because of how they see him, but it doesn’t make them less Christian,” he concluded.
