Tensions Flare at Cape Coast North Voter Registration with Gunfire

In Cape Coast North, a voters registration center became the site of alarming violence when gunshots were fired amidst a growing confrontation between political factions.
The incident occurred in the Central Region, where political tempers flared during the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.
According to reports from Adom News, the gunfire was initiated by individuals believed to be bodyguards of Horace Ekow Ewusi, the parliamentary candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The shots were allegedly fired on Thursday morning in an attempt to disrupt a group of people who were being registered by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Kofi Adjei, a reporter for Adom News, who witnessed the events unfold, indicated that the individuals targeted by the NPP guards were being bused into the center from Moree, located in the nearby Abura Asebu Kwamankese constituency.
It is understood that the NPP supporters present at the registration center made a firm declaration not to allow these registrants to participate in the registration process.
The escalation began when a misunderstanding ensued between members of the NPP and NDC at the site.

The conflict intensified quickly, culminating in the discharge of multiple gunshots which reportedly were meant to intimidate the NDC supporters and prevent the registration of new voters brought by the party.
During the chaotic scene, further reports emerged that the phone of Godfred Onso Nyameye, the NDC constituency Youth Organizer, was forcibly taken from him, exacerbating the already volatile situation.
Authorities are currently investigating the incident, which has raised significant concerns about the safety of public electoral processes in the area.
This violent disruption underscores the underlying political tensions that have marred the voter registration efforts, highlighting the intense rivalry between the major political parties as they prepare for upcoming elections.
This event at Cape Coast North is a stark reminder of the challenges Ghana faces in ensuring that electoral processes are conducted without interference and in a manner that safeguards the democratic rights of all citizens.
