In this maiden edition of Talking Tactics, we will be unveiling the tactical approach of Manchester United and Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim. Starting with his biography Ruben Filipe Marques Amorim was born on January 27, 1985. He started his football career journey as a pro player playing in the midfield position before later moving on to the managerial job in 2018. Ruben Amorim started his football journey playing for Belenenses in Portugal. He made a total of 96 appearances during his time at the club, scoring 4 goals. He later moved to play for Benfica and Braga, all in Portugal, before moving to Al-Wakrah in Qatar, where he retired, adding a total of 139 appearances with 10 goals. He also made a total of 14 appearances for the Portugal national team, representing them in 2 FIFA World Cups. He started his managerial career at Casa Pia; he then joined Braga before joining Sporting in Portugal. In 2024, last year, Ruben Amroim joined English Premier League side Manchester United following the sacking of coach Eric Ten Hag.
Tactical Approach.
Formation.
Ruben Amorim’s tactical approach to games is likely to see him adapting to the 3-4-3 formation. This formation includes three center backs, four players in the midfield (including two defensive midfielders), and two wingbacks on both the right and left flanks, as well as three attackers up front.
Defending.
Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 formation does change to a 5-4-1 formation when out of possession or when defending. The two wingbacks on both flanks drop deep to join the center backs to create a five back defense system, and also two of the attackers join the two remaining defensive midfielders, leaving one striker up front. This basically means Ruben Amorim needs more men to be defending when his team is out of possession.
Attacking.
Ruben Amorim makes very good use of his wingbacks when attacking. The wingbacks make sure to push forward and sometimes drop deep in the midfield, creating space for wingers to operate. Wingers and wingbacks are mostly found making crosses or cutting into the penalty box for strikers to have a tap-in or head in to goal. The three center backs also play a pivotal role in attacking, as they are seen initiating the buildup play and moving the ball into the midfield.
High Man Pressing & Counter Attacks.
Ruben Amorim has designed his tactics in such a way that his players do a lot of aggressive pressing and end up winning the ball from opponents. Amorim’s team do win the ball easily and quickly launch swift counterattacks, which sometimes result in goal scoring.
Concluding on the maiden edition of Talking Tactics, Ruben Amorim’s managerial career has seen him moving from coaching Sporting in the Portuguese league to coaching one of the big clubs in the world. His high-pressing gameplay has seen him putting on some impressive results in the English Premier League and making headlines in England.
