Tailor Convicted for Stealing from Church Offertory Box
A 35-year-old tailor, Moses Vincent, has been convicted of stealing an unspecified amount of money from the offertory box of Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Dansoman.
The incident occurred on two separate occasions, with the second theft involving a GH₵600 envelope placed on the church altar.
According to the prosecution, Vincent was captured on the church’s Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) footage entering the church premises and stealing the money.
He pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing but denied the other allegations, including unlawful entry and being on premises for unlawful purposes.
The court, presided over by Halimah El-Abdul Baasit, convicted Vincent on his own plea and remanded him till June 26, 2024.
When he reappeared in court, Vincent maintained his plea of guilt and was ordered by the Court to a bond to be of good behavior for the next 12 months.
The prosecution revealed that Vincent had claimed to be staying at the Arts Centre in Accra and that he was arrested by Chantel Agbenyo, a security officer at Dansoman Exhibition Roundabout, with the assistance of Thomas Wahab, head of security at the church.

The complainant reported that Vincent was captured on CCTV footage having entered the church premises and stealing money from the offertory box on March 20, 2024.
However, some elders from the church came to the police station to plead on behalf of Vincent and he was initially set free.
Unfortunately, Vincent was caught again on CCTV footage entering the church premises and stealing an envelope containing GH₵600 from the altar in May 2024. He was re-arrested by the police and admitted to committing the offense in his caution statement.
The prosecution stated that the stolen money was not retrieved and that copies of the CCTV footage were obtained for evidential purposes.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of security measures in places of worship and highlights the need for individuals to respect the sacred spaces they occupy. It also underscores the importance of community involvement in combating crime and ensuring justice is served.
