Over 600,000 Ghana Cards are awaiting collection- NIA

The National Identification Authority (NIA) is tackling a challenge of clearing a significant backlog of unprinted Ghana Cards and they’re also dealing with the issue of over 600,000 unclaimed cards in their offices across the country.
Despite the current arrival of 700,000 blank cards to address printing delays dating back back to 2023, the NIA is now urging citizens to come and claim their long awaited IDs.
According to a press release issued on February 18th, the National Identification Authority (NIA) revealed that the newly acquired blank cards will be used for the printing of pending records, including first time issuance, replacement and personal information updates. The technical team of the NIA is tracking the printing process to ensure that the cards are distributed to appropriate regions and districts offices for collection.
NIA stated that “We have over 600,000 cards sitting in our offices, waiting to be collected. These cards are a vital key to unlocking essential services, so we’re reminding all applicants that their Ghana cards are ready for pickup at their nearest NIA office”.
Again, we know the Ghana Card is a mandatory identification document for Ghanaians aged 15 and above. It is also required for accessing banking services, healthcare, voter registration and some critical transactions. Upon all its importance over 600,000 citizens have decided not to go and pick them up. The governance analyst, Kwame Asare said “The Ghana Card is more than just an ID but it’s a gateway to essential services and economic participation”.
To some individuals , the issues relating to the unclaimed Ghana cards highlights the need for the National Identification Authority (NIA) to address its operational inefficiencies. Ama Serwaa, a trader said “I registered for my Ghana Card years ago but I haven’t heard anything since then and I need it to open a bank account. I don’t even know where to start looking for it”.
The National Identification Authority (NIA) has also promised that it will develop more efficient distribution systems to address the issue as it has started up a public awareness campaigns to encourage citizens to claim their ID cards. Through these effort, the National Identification Authority (NIA) is making significant progress in tackling this challenge.
