NUGS Demands Immediate Resolution to Prolonged CETAG Strike
In a new press statement, The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has expressed concerns about the ongoing Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) strike which is currently in its 40th day.
The strike action has affected the academic calendar halting academic progress of students.
The purpose of CETAG’s strike action was to compel the government to fix its poor salary payments to teachers under CETAG.
The National Union of Ghana Students has acknowledged the recent updates, notably the stoppage of salaries for July 2024 for all teaching staff at the Colleges of Education.
This release was mandated by the Minister for Education on July 22, 2024.
In retaliation, CETAG announced the cessation of services across all colleges effective July 23, 2024.
In the press statement issued today, NUGS highlighted some potential detrimental effects this prolonged strike could pose to students of the colleges of education, particularly disruption of academic calendar, delay in examination, postponed graduation for final year students.
NUGS highlighted the psychological toll on students, stating that the strike has led to “frustration and helplessness” among the students.

The risks involved, NUGS warned, are too relevant to ignore, as the future of many students hangs in the balance.
“The education and future of students are at stake,” the statement read. “The academic progress of thousands of students hangs in the balance, and the longer this strike continues, the more detrimental its effects will be.”
NUGS has called on both Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana (TTAG) and Hon. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum to resolve the CETAG strike action.
Elected leaders of NUGS has began holding talks with key stakeholders, urging them to prioritize the interest of students and solve the ongoing dispute promptly and amicably.
In its plea, NUGS appealed to CETAG, the government, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), and other relevant bodies to expedite negotiations and end the strike action.
NUGS elaborated on the importance of resuming academic work with further delay, allowing students to continue their studies without any disruption.
“NUGS remains steadfast in advocating the rights and welfare of students,” stated Kyerehmeh Oppong Daniel, the 57th NUGS President.
“We assure all students that we will continue to engage with all relevant parties to resolve this issue as swiftly as possible.”
As the situation develops, NUGS has pledged to keep the student body informed and involved in any progress towards resolving the strike.
