New York State Reports Highest Single Day Death Toll
On Wednesday, New York State recorded 779 deaths, the state’s highest single day death toll resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.
On the morning of April 9th, New York State had a Covid-19 death rate of 32 out of 100,000, even higher than Italy’s death rate of 29 out of 100,000.
Authorities warned the official numbers may not reflect the true number of deaths because some victims die in their homes. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo ordered flags at half-staff to honor the victims.

Doctors and nurses reported that the sick often seem healthy one moment and then close to death soon after.
This is yet another factor that makes COVID-19 particularly hard to fight. In his daily press briefing, Cuomo sounded a positive note, reporting lower levels of new hospitalizations and signs that the curve appears to be bending in New York State.
On a national level, officials are warning of a high number of American deaths this week. The US death toll may soon surpass Spain’s to become the world’s second highest.
