Missed Chances and Early Exits: Ghana ‘s Swim Team and Wrestlers Falter at African Games
The African Games 2023 in Accra witnessed Ghanaian athletes enduring tough competitions, with the swim team narrowly missing out on medals and the wrestling team facing early exits.
In the swimming events held at the Borteyman Sports Complex, Ghana showcased promising talent but fell just short of reaching the podium, recording fourth-place finishes in both the men’s 100m freestyle and the 4x100m mixed relay freestyle events.
Additionally, Stacey Harry represented Ghana in the men’s 100m butterfly final, securing another fourth place, just missing the coveted medal positions.
South Africa’s Clayton Jimmie emerged as a standout performer, clinching gold with a commanding lead, while Alexander Skinner from Namibia and Egypt’s Abdalla Nasr followed in second and third places, respectively.
Despite the setbacks, Pavel Kutashev, the coach of Ghana’s swimming team, remained positive about the outcomes, acknowledging the effort and determination of his athletes. “It was a good day,” he said, reflecting on the close calls in securing a medal.
“It wasn’t perfect, when you consider we had two 4th places, but a good day overall.”
