Ghanaian Badminton Player Critiques Poor Logistics at African Games 2023
In a recent interview, Leslie Addo, a prominent badminton player from Ghana, voiced significant concerns regarding the poor Logistics at the African Games 2023.
The event, intended to showcase the best of African athletes, has been marred for the Ghanaian team by inadequate transport and equipment issues, directly impacting their performance.
On the opening day, the Ghanaian badminton team received their equipment, a delay that Addo believes compromised their readiness and overall performance in the competition.
Highlighting the severity of the logistical shortcomings, Addo revealed the team’s transportation to their matches was far from what might be expected at an international sporting event.
“We sat in our coach’s vehicle, a pickup, with about eight players in the bucket because we didn’t get any transport. Remember, we are the host nation,” Addo expressed his frustration to Joy Sports.

The consequences of these logistical challenges were evident in the team’s performance.
In the singles events, no Ghanaian player made it past the round of 16. The mixed doubles saw Addo and partner Cindy Tornyernyor, along with other Ghanaian pairs, being ousted early by their opponents from Egypt, Algeria, Nigeria, and South Africa.
In addition to transport woes, the quality and appropriateness of the equipment provided to the team were also problematic. Addo, specifically, faced issues with the racket and footwear.
“The racket I received just yesterday… and for footwear, I was given size 36 instead of my actual size 47,” he disclosed, underscoring the lack of preparation and attention to athletes’ needs.
Despite these hurdles, Addo and his teammate Ebenezer Korampong managed to secure a spot in the quarterfinals of the men’s doubles, demonstrating resilience by defeating a duo from Burkina Faso in straight sets.
This success, however, does not mask the broader issues that have plagued Team Ghana.
The African Games 2023, hosted by Ghana, were an opportunity to highlight the country’s prowess in organizing such a significant event and its athletic talent.
Yet, the experiences shared by Leslie Addo shed light on the pressing need for better logistical support and resources for athletes, ensuring they can perform at their best without facing such avoidable obstacles.
