Minority Wear Red and Black Outfits To Protest Suspension of MPs
Minority wear red and black outfits to protest the suspension of their Members of Parliament by RT. Hon. Alban Bagbin after the utterances at the vetting center days ago.
The Minority Faction in Parliament wore black attire with red arms and headbands on Tuesday, February 4th, 2025, to protest the suspension of three (3) of their Members of Parliament (MP) ahead of today’s parliamentary proceedings.
Their unusual clothing shows their disagreement with Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to suspend three (3) of their Members of Parliament for two weeks.
The three NPP MPs suspended are; Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Jerry Ahmed Shaib- MP for Weija-Gbawe and Alhassan Tampuli Sulemana-MP for Gushegu.
The disruption occurred immediately after the vetting of the nominee for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe at about 10 pm. The disagreement started when the Minority proposed postponing sitting to Friday, citing concerns about the day’s proceedings.
However, the Majority rejected the proposal, insisting the process should continue. The Majority accused the Ranking Member of spending about three hours on one nominee, hence the delay. The ministerial nominees, specifically the Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, and Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa had been ushered in and the Clerk to the committee was about to administer the oath to Mr Akandoh.
A heated argument between Minority and Majority MPs escalated, leading to damage to furniture and microphone. The suspension of the three MPs comes after they were seen as principal instigators in the scuffle which at the Appointments Committee resulted in the destruction of equipment and property of parliament. The disorganized incident that ruined the session on Thursday, January. 30.
They chanted patriotic songs, demanding the rescinding of Speaker Alban Bagbin’s “unilateral” decision. The Speaker set up an investigative committee to scrutinize the incident for the necessary action to be taken against those found blameworthy, including charging them an additional cost for the destruction of tables and microphones.
But the minority side insists the Speaker acted arbitrarily and outside the Standing Orders of Parliament. They are demanding that the Speaker rescinds the decision, gives the affected MPs a fair hearing and allows the investigative process to continue.
On Tuesday, Parliament tightened security in the chamber in order to prevent the suspended MPs and Non-MPs from gaining access inside.
