Former Ghana Defender Samuel Osei Kuffour Debunks Claims of Michael Essien’s Financial Woes
Contrary to recent reports suggesting that former Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien is facing financial difficulties, his former teammate and fellow Ghanaian football legend, Samuel Osei Kuffour, has come out to debunk the claims, stating emphatically that Essien is “filthy rich”.
In an exclusive interview with Angel FM’s Saddick Adams, Kuffour, who played alongside Essien for the Ghana national team and at club level, dismissed the reports as baseless and shameless. According to Kuffour, the claims are a reflection of a negative mindset towards their fellow Ghanaians.
“To bring out the news and say Michael is broke is a shame. It is a shame that we think so negatively about our people. We should be positive; Michael is not broke. We are talking about a house that they took from him, which cost $20 million, and another one that costs $30 million,” Kuffour stated.

Kuffour emphasized that it is unfair to make such assertions without having personal knowledge of Essien’s financial situation. “Nobody with a proper conscience will come out and say all kinds of things. You never spoke to the person; you never know exactly what the person is going through. So, how can you justify saying someone is broke?”
Kuffour’s sentiments were echoed by his friend and former teammate, who has built a successful career in football and beyond. Essien’s illustrious career spanned top clubs like Liberty Professionals, Lyon, Chelsea, Real Madrid, and AC Milan, where he won numerous titles, including the UEFA Champions League in 2012.
Since retiring from active football, Essien has transitioned into coaching and currently serves as a first-team assistant coach at FC Nordsjaelland in Denmark. Despite these accomplishments, Essien’s financial situation has been called into question by certain quarters.
Kuffour’s comments have brought relief to fans of the former midfielder, who were shocked by the recent reports. The Ghanaian football legend’s defense of his friend and colleague serves as a reminder of the importance of verification before spreading information.
In conclusion, Samuel Osei Kuffour’s statement puts to rest any doubts about Michael Essien’s financial status. As one of Ghana’s most decorated footballers, it is reassuring to know that he remains a financially secure individual.
