Mason rescued with serious leg injury after building collapsed at Kasoa New Market

A mason who was stuck under the building after being collapsed at the Kasoa New Market in the Awutu Senya East Municipality of the Central Region has been rescued by the GNFS after a two-hour operation. The mason was seriously injured on his leg but he is receiving treatment at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
Some representatives from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Ghana Police Service, officials and Ghana National Fire Service from the Municipal Assembly were quickly called in to assist after the incident took place ( Saturday, October 11, 2025 ).
An eyewitnesses said the building collapsed instantly which caused a lot of destruction and it also created panic among traders and community members in the busy market area.
Mr. Seth Banini, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Awutu Senya East, who visited the place said the collapse was because of the use of poor construction materials and some foundation problems.
He stated that “What we have come to realise is that, the building was constructed with substandard materials. They used 11.5 or 12mm iron rods for the columns, and the beam lapping was poorly done.”
He also drew to attention that “This building has been there for over 10 years, so it was also not under our management. But we always encourage anyone building new structures to come to the Assembly with their documents for our engineers to inspect and approve them before they being with construction. It’s not about revenue, it’s about protecting lives and property.”
Mr. Seth Banini, the MCE said the mason was fortunate to be alive because the falling section just missed by hitting his upper body. Mr. Seth Banini stressed that “If it had hit his neck, he would have died instantly. Thankfully, it fell on his leg, though the injury is serious, and we are also praying they don’t cut his legs.”
He commended the Fire Service and National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) personnel for their immediate response. He added that further inspections would be undertaken to find potential building collapse risk in the area.
The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) Director for Awutu Senya East also disclosed that his team came to save the victim and he encouraged traders that they shouldn’t go near damaged structures.
