MahamaCares receives donations from 4 key organizations

Four notable organizations, including telecommunication giant, Telecel Group, have donated medical equipment and cash towards the Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund, otherwise known as MahamaCares.
Telecel Group donated equipment that would aid in cervical cancer screening. The equipment comprises a biopsy instruments, designed for three diagnostic centres of the country.
Beyond the equipment donated, the group would take care of the operational expenses for those three centres for two years including the expenses associated with the disposables for the diagnostics.
Alive Industries made a formal presentation of a cheque for GH¢500,000 in fulfillment of the promise made during the launch of the fund by the President, John Dramani Mahama, while East Cantonments Pharmacy and KIM Energies donated GH¢50,000 and GH¢5000 respectively towards the fund. MahamaCares is a strategic initiative undertaken by the government to strategically address the growing threat of chronic non-communicable diseases.
The fund will facilitate advanced medical care for a range of chronic diseases, including cancers, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney failure, stroke and other complications.
It will also gradually extend to include rehabilitative (recovery) care, palliative (pain management) services, and home care services.
The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, recipient of the donation in Accra yesterday, extended sincere gratitude to the four organisations for responding to President Mahama’s issue a call for support to the fund and gave them assurance that their contributions would be allocated for fund implementation.
Reaffirming President Mahama’s appeal for notable organizations to support the fund, he said non communicable diseases were within reach of everyone highlighting that, those affected by the disease could be their workers or clients. He said there was a positive relationship between health status and productivity levels and added that if poor health conditions, they would not be able to give their all.
President Mahama explained that the fund was intended to support more than just individuals who had already developed severe symptoms and so were expected to go through treatment, but it would also identify ways to diagnose cases early so that they don’t develop secondary complications. He stated that “So those of you out there, you can contribute anything you have to MahamaCares and we have a short code that you can contribute to. Its very simple, *255#.”
