Mahama Attacks Electoral Commission Again!
Former President John Dramani Mahama has once again voiced significant criticisms against Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC), suggesting partisan influences and questionable practices within the agency, especially regarding the 2020 elections.
Speaking at the London School of Economics, Mahama articulated concerns over the integrity of the electoral process which he attributed to the current government’s approach to appointments within the EC.
Mahama praised the historical performance of Ghana’s EC, which had been regarded as a model across Africa for its innovative electoral processes.
However, he expressed dismay at the recent developments under the Akufo-Addo administration, accusing it of compromising the commission’s neutrality by appointing individuals with clear partisan ties, specifically from the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Highlighting specific examples, Mahama pointed out that one commissioner had openly described the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as a significant threat to democracy in Ghana.
He also noted another commissioner’s prior involvement with the NPP, including participation in their manifesto development.
Such appointments, Mahama argued, could undermine the public’s trust in the electoral process.
The former President also shed light on recent recruitment practices for returning officers, alleging that ministers and district chief executives were instructed to nominate party loyalists for these critical roles.
This practice, he suggested, raises questions about the neutrality of those appointed to oversee the elections.
Mahama’s comments underscore his broader concern: the need for electoral reforms in Ghana.
He proposed that the appointment of EC officials be removed from presidential influence and instead be managed by an independent body.
This, he believes, would foster greater impartiality and restore confidence in the electoral process.
Concluding his remarks, Mahama emphasized the complexity of running elections and the necessity for engaging all stakeholders to ensure the integrity of the process.
He expressed confidence in Ghana’s ability to handle these challenges through robust discussion and the implementation of necessary reforms, hinting at the resilience of Ghana’s democratic institutions despite current pressures.
