Govt to deploy 60,000 surveillance cameras nationwide to combat cybercrime

The President of Ghana, John Dramami Mahama declared on Friday, December 5, 2025, during the inauguration of the National Signals Bureau Regional Command Centre in Ho in the Volta Region that his government is going to expand the use of technology and infrastructure to make the country safer. He said he will deploy of 60,000 surveillance cameras across the country.
President Mahama said the government is investing in technology and infrastructure which will help upgrade the intelligence system. President Mahama stated that upgrade included the “deployment of 60,000 surveillance cameras across the length and breadth of our nation” and the installation of “500 new 4G and 5G communication sites”.
He said some other tools that will help upgrade the intelligence system include a proper national security communication system that will use a high level data processing and artificial intelligence, building a modern data which will help us in monitoring system and cyber defence centre in Accra.
This cyber defence centre in Accra will be the headquarters of the National Signals Bureau, and it will also help in the expansion of regional command centres.
President Mahama said the National Signals Bureau became “a technologically agile and mission focused agency”. He said its work has helped the police in their ongoing operations.
President John Dramani Mahama said that “Recently the police service have made breakthroughs in arresting armed robbers. There was a gang that attacked many rural banks. There are other murder cases. They have been able to put an end to these crimes and I must say that most of it is thanks to the National Signals Bureau.”
The President issued a warning to the public about the rate at which online scams rising and this include fake adverts bearing his name. Due to that the President drew to attention that “I have been the victim of it many times. I am sure you see on your mobile phones that John Mahama has launched a free grant and so you should apply. And I am giving 5,000 Ghana cedis each and so you pay a small registration fee. Do not ever be caught in that trap. They are all scammers.”
President Mahama noted that the National Signals Bureau was now able to monitor offenders who are behind online fraud and intolerant content.
President Mahama again said “The anonymity of the new media gives people the opportunity to hide behind a faceless medium and put out hate speech and insulting behaviour. Happily, we have the capacity to track you down using your IP number and other tools that the National Signals Bureau has.”
