GAYO partner LEKMA, HRRG, others to sensitize three communities in Accra on plastic waste management

Over 500 residents of three (3) selected communities within Teshie, a suburb of Accra have benefited from a day door-to-door sensitization campaign aimed at equipping them with relevant knowledge and skills needed to effectively segregate and manage plastic waste properly in a bid to safeguard the environment from further destruction.

The campaign dubbed: “Trash to Cash” was initiated by the Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO) with partnership of SESA Recycling and the Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly.

It was equally supported by the GAYO Eco Club Campus Chapters, Glittering Stars, the Human Rights Reporters Ghana (HRRG), La Tenu radio and Ambitious Africa.

The event which was held on the theme: “Promoting citizen participation in effective plastic waste management seeks to enhance citizen participation in waste segregation, raise awareness of sustainability, and help shift paradigms on plastic waste production.

The exercise which took place during the early hours of Wednesday November 23 2022, witnessed the participants interacted vigorously with residents at their various door steps including sensitizing school children in classrooms within the communities earmarked under the project which consists adjoining electoral areas of Tsuibleoo, Fertilizer and Salem respectively.

The campaigners utilized the key messages of the campaigns which include how to conduct proper segregation and effective waste management, health benefits of proper waste management and sustainable plastic recovery towards achieving a successful event.

Plastic waste management remains a huge challenge not only in Ghana but globally as citizens’ struggle with its segregation while plastic waste pollution poses a huge threat to humans and the aquatic life environment.

According to Mabel Naa Amorkor Laryea, the GAYO Assistant Project Coordinator for Zero Waste Accra, the campaign forms part of her outfit’s initiative under the Sustainable Enterprise Driven Solution to Plastic Waste Management implement in Teshie on the need to sensitize communities on better plastic waste management practices as a priority for efficient collection to the Material Recovery Facility in La.

Speaking in an interview with the humanrightsreporters.com, she revealed that the Green Africa Youth Organization is poised in its quest to enhance partnerships with relevant institutions on delivering sustainable plastic waste management advocacy, while championing waste reduction within the community and increasing collection in these communities.

She furthered: “this would help influence the development of a strategic plan for effective communication on plastic waste management within the municipality as a whole”.
