Election 2024: Mahama not seeking support from Russian govt – Campaign Team
The Mahama Campaign Team has condemned a recent publication by Asaase Radio and Daily Guide, alleging that the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, sought assistance from the Russian government ahead of the December polls.
The team has described the publication as a “shadowy and unethical journalism practice” aimed at defaming the flagbearer.
According to Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Spokesperson for Mahama, the flagbearer was in Russia to launch the Russian language translation of his memoir, “My First Coup D’etat and Other Stories from the Lost Decades of Africa” at the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow.
In a statement on Friday, July 12, 2024, Mogtari clarified that Mahama’s visit to Russia was not a secret meeting with Russian authorities to seek support for his presidential campaign.

Instead, it was an official event attended by Ghana’s Ambassador to Russia, HE Dr Oheneba Akyaa Opoku Ware, and her staff from the Embassy in Moscow.
Mogtari urged Ghanaians to debunk the allegation as no such thing occurred during Mahama’s stay in Moscow.
She emphasized that the flagbearer’s visit was purely a cultural and academic engagement, aimed at promoting his book and fostering intellectual exchange between Ghana and Russia.
The Mahama Campaign Team has therefore called on Asaase Radio and Daily Guide to retract their publication and apologize for spreading false information.
The team believes that such unethical journalism practices can only serve to undermine trust in the media and threaten the integrity of public discourse.
In a time when fake news is becoming increasingly prevalent, it is essential that journalists adhere to ethical standards and fact-check their stories before publication.
The Mahama Campaign Team hopes that this incident will serve as a wake-up call for all stakeholders in Ghana’s media landscape to prioritize truth and accuracy.
As Ghanaians prepare for the upcoming polls, it is crucial that we have access to credible information that informs our decisions.
The Mahama Campaign Team remains committed to transparency and accountability, and urges all Ghanaians to join them in demanding responsible journalism from our media outlets.
