Education Minister unveils new uniforms for basic schools
A new set of uniforms for basic schools has been introduced by Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei-Adutwum as part of a rebranding push for public education.
He claims that this is a component of the Education Ministry’s rebranding initiatives to improve public schools’ reputation.
At a presentation held for the unveiling ceremony at the University of Professional Studies in Accra, he made this declaration. “You see, you don’t see brown and yellow—we are rebranding public schools,” stated Dr. Adutwum.
Not blue and white, not brown and yellow; we’re also switching the uniforms. Ghana is led by Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia and President Akufo-Addo.
The change has already started. No good reason exists for us not to. We will provide Ghana with better, something we can all be proud of, because they deserve it.
Dr. Adutwum maintains that he has not stopped attending basic schools, despite the claims of his detractors.
He sees a day when he is making things right, and parents will beg to have their kids enrolled in basic public schools.
They’ll remark, “We’ll give you credit for finishing Senior High School, but you abandoned basic education, and now that kids are sitting under trees, you’re talking about drones.”
“I have a response for them. I look forward to the day when parents will beg to enroll their children in front of the school; that day is coming, and it started under Nana Akufo Addo,” he continued.
Nevertheless, Dr. Clement Apaak, the deputy ranking member of the Parliamentary Education Committee, has denounced the action, saying it is an inappropriate priority.
He brought up the incapacity grants and the disrepair of public basic schools, both of which are essential to the operation of basic education.
Dr. Apaak questioned why these urgent issues aren’t receiving the same level of attention as funding for rebranding public basic schools.
The government’s focus has consistently been primarily on the execution of the free Senior High School program.
As of right now, I am certain that capitation grants—the funding that enables us to claim that public education is free—are eight terms overdue.
Head teachers of basic schools use these grants to plan extracurricular activities like sports and cultural events.
As a matter of fact, only 65% of the textbooks for the new curriculum, which went into effect in September 2019, have been sent to public basic schools nationwide.
Why is the government still planning to spend money rebranding our public basic schools with a new uniform when there are over 1.3 million individuals in the nation without access to furniture? he continued.
After the 2019 modification made by Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the current Energy Minister and former Minister of Education, this represents the second consecutive change during the Akufo-Addo administration.
