EC reports two women in two circulating videos to Police as “Fake” on Voter Registration
Electoral Commission Warns Against False Allegations of Secret Voter Registration and Transfer
The Electoral Commission (EC) has drawn the attention of the Ghana Police Service to two videos circulating on social media, in which two women claim that the commission is undertaking a secret voter registration exercise and secretly registering voters.
The commission has described these allegations as “false” and has called on the police to arrest and prosecute those behind the “fabrications as a matter of urgency”.
According to a statement issued by the EC Deputy Chairman in charge of Operations, Samuel Tettey, the commission would like to inform the public that both allegations are without base and aimed at tarnishing the image of the commission and causing disaffection in the lead up to the General Election in December 2024.
“We urge all stakeholders, especially political parties, to avoid propagating falsehood which has the potential of undermining state institutions and destroying the peace and stability of our nation,” said Mr. Tettey.
“We must work together to promote truth and transparency in our democratic process.”
Some part of the statement revealed that the commission concluded the 2024 Limited Voter Registration Exercise on May 29th, 2024, and the Application for Transfer of Votes ended on June 14th, 2024, with an extension for students, prisoners, and security personnel from July 3rd to July 5th, 2024.
The commission emphasized that all Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits used for the Transfer Exercise were deactivated after the exercise, making it impossible to register voters or undertake transfers as alleged by the two women in the video.
Furthermore, no evidence was provided by the women, and no images of registration kits or materials used for the purported exercise were seen in the video.
“We find these allegations dangerous to our democratic process and we entreat the general public to disregard them,” said Mr. Tettey. “We call on the Ghana Police Service to arrest and prosecute those behind these fabrications as a matter of urgency.”
As far as this issue is concerned , we encourage all stakeholders to be cautious of false information being spread on social media and other platforms.
It is crucial that we maintain peace and stability in our democracy by promoting truth and transparency.
The EC will continue to work tirelessly to ensure free, fair, and transparent elections in December 2024.
