Teacher unions strike hits Hohoe
Teachers’ unions across the country have called for a strike, which means that all schools are closed in the Hohoe Municipality.
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and other groups called for an indefinite strike over the appointment of Dr. Eric Nkansah as the new Director General of Ghana Education Service (GES).
The Hohoe E.P Basic School and the Hohoe E.P Senior High School were empty when Ghana News Agency (GNA) checked on them on Tuesday.
It turned out that the Senior High School was being watched over by interns and National Service Personnel.
Some students say their teachers told them to go home because they were on strike, and they were worried because they didn’t know when their teachers would be back in class.
The Akpafu-Sanco Local GNAT Secretary, Ms. Sussana Yesutor Tengey, told the GNA that besides problems with the Director-General, there were also serious problems with teachers, such as promotions.
She said that the teachers in the 2016 class, who were supposed to be promoted in 2020, were still not promoted and that many other classes had the same problems.
Ms. Tengey said that primary school teachers who had money taken out of their paychecks for laptops have still not gotten the laptops.
Mr. Bismark Ardy, a parent, said he didn’t understand why teachers would go on strike and that parents were being treated unfairly.
He said that most strike actions were called because of how members were treated at work, not because of who was named DG.
Mr. Ardy said that the President always chose the new Director-General and that the teacher union had nothing to worry about if the President thought the new Director was right for the job.
