Bawumia challenges Mahama to a live debate on economy, governance and policies
The current Vice President of Ghana who is also the Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), his Excellency Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has challenged the Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama to have a live debate with him.
The essence of this debate is to give both parties the opportunity to defend and explain their respective visions and policies to the citizens of Ghana.
This challenge emerged not long after the campaign team of John Dramani Mahama rejected calls for any presidential debate.
During one of Bawumia’s campaign tours in a the North East Region of Ghana, Bunkpurugu, Dr. Bawumia stated that he has eagerly been waiting for a debate challenge with John Mahama, just that he is less optimistic that would happen because Mahama is “running away” from a presidential debate.
“I am looking forward to a debate with John Mahama on the economy, on the country, on governance,’ Dr Bawumia said.
“But I am afraid that he is running away from a debate. His people say he doesn’t want to debate. I have never heard an opposition leader who doesn’t want to debate. But he knows I will expose the emptiness of his policies.”

Dr. Bawumia also added that John Mahama and his campaign team are unable to explain to Ghanaians what their 24-hour economy policy is, adding that John Mahama is avoiding a debate because he would be exposed big time.
“He says he has a 24-hour economy which he cannot explain. It is as empty as an empty barrel. He cannot explain it and none of his people can explain it. They say they will be exporting lions and elephants.”
“When we meet man to man, we can debate and the country will see where our policies lie and that is where we should go. We should give the country an opportunity to listen to us. If he chooses not to debate, I’ll continue to sell my policies.”
In most developed countries where democracy is the core political system, presidential debates are firmly rooted as part of the electoral process.
Many, including civil society groups, have called for a debate between the two leading candidates of the election, for Ghanaians to listen to them on their policies and vision for the country.
Meanwhile, John Mahama has been applauded for his recent media engagement during which he answered several questions thrown at him.
Others have called on the NPP’s Dr Bawumia to hold a similar media engagement.
Henry Akoto of the NDC has also dared Bawumia to hold a media engagement session to do as Mahama did.
