Apple iPhone 14 Plus – Specifications, Review and Price in Ghana
I never liked phones with big screens. But something changed in 2022. I spent most of that year staring at the 5.8-inch screen of my iPhone XS late at night while my newborn slept next to me.
When I couldn’t sleep for so many nights, I realized I needed a phone with a bigger screen. So, the next year, I switched to the iPhone 12 Pro Max, which was a big change from what I used to like.
Since then, I’ve used the same 6.7-inch iPhone every day, whether to scroll through Instagram or watch shows on Netflix. But until now, Apple’s Pro series was the only one with a bigger screen.
This year, it changed the iPhone line-up by adding a bigger iPhone 14 Plus with a screen size of 6.7 inches.
Obviously, the iPhone 14 series looks like a small upgrade. For one, Apple hasn’t changed the processor; it’s still the A15 Bionic that ran the iPhone 13 series last year.
The camera’s megapixel count stays at 12MP, but Apple says there are improvements, especially in low light. But is that enough to recommend the iPhone 14 Plus? Here is my review, where I try to answer some questions.
Has anything changed about the Apple iPhone 14 Plus since the iPhone 13?
This question is hard to answer. With the iPhone series, improvements are now made in small steps. And with the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, it’s impossible not to compare them to the iPhone 13.
Apple kept the notch on the iPhone 14 Plus. The “Dynamic Island” is only on the iPhone 14 Pro. The processor is the same as the A15 Bionic, but compared to older iPhones, it has one more core for graphics. The screens can’t have a faster refresh rate, either.
Since the iPhone 14 Plus is larger, it makes sense that it has a bigger battery. Most of the time, Apple doesn’t say how big the battery is, but reports say that for the Plus, it’s 4,325 mAh.
On Apple’s website, the iPhone 14 Plus can play videos for 26 hours, while the Pro Max can play videos for 29 hours. The iPhone 14 Plus’s battery life was impressive for how I used it.
Even if you use this phone a lot, it should last the whole day. You can easily get one and a half days of light use. I used WhatsApp and Instagram, took a lot of pictures, watched shows on different OTT apps, and even played some games.
The battery life is still one of the best reasons to buy the iPhone 14 Plus instead of the iPhone 14 or even the older iPhone 13, which may be cheaper.
Let’s talk about how well the iPhone 14 Plus works. It can do most things well. Whether you’re playing games like Genshin Impact or just looking at Instagram or Facebook, there’s no lag.
I also didn’t have to deal with any major warming up. The iPhone is still the only device where I don’t have to worry about having a lot of Chrome or Safari tabs open. I usually have between 100 and 120 tabs open.
But is it faster than the iPhone 13 by a lot or about the same? That’s not an easy question to answer. One way is to look at test scores like those from GeekBench 5.
During my testing, the iPhone 14 Plus got a single-core score of 1734 and a multi-core score of 4704. The old iPhone 13 got a single-core score of 1725 and a multicore score of 4615. I’m talking about these tests, which I don’t usually do because it’s hard to show that the iPhone 14 Plus is a huge improvement.
What about the camera on the Apple iPhone 14 Plus? Not much has changed, right?
When I first used the camera on my iPhone 14 Plus, I didn’t notice much of a difference. But as I took more photos, especially in low light, you can see that this is a change, especially compared to the older iPhone 13.
With the iPhone 14 Plus, you can take photos that are clear and full of details. I turned on the “Rich Contrast” option for the photographic styles, so the colors are definitely more clear.
As you can see from the photos below, the iPhone 14 Plus still takes great photos in well-lit situations.
But when it was dark, I saw the biggest difference. I used the iPhone 14 Plus to take pictures of some colored lamps in front of a house.
I also took good pictures with the iPhone 14 Plus of a candle I lit in my bathroom when there was no other light in the room. There is more detail in the selfies as well. The cinematic video has got better, but I still like what the Pixel 7 and the Vivo X80 Pro do better.
Is this the best camera on a flagship phone I’ve seen? Of course not. There are times when the iPhone 14 Plus has trouble, especially if you use too much zoom in low light.
Keep in mind that the optical zoom is only 2x, so keep that in mind. Still, it’s not the best or most convenient way to take portraits. But if you wanted to know if the camera is the same, I would say that there have been improvements and changes.
Should you buy an Apple iPhone 14 Plus?
Yes, if you want an iPhone with a big screen but don’t have the money for a Pro model or don’t need one. When it comes to the camera and battery, the iPhone 14 Plus doesn’t let you down, and it can compete with the best in the business. But keep in mind that you are paying nearly 9,000 Ghana Cedis for what is basically a bigger screen. Those who have an iPhone 11 or older can think of this as a way to upgrade.
If you have an iPhone 13, the answer is no. I used the iPhone 13 until recently, and others in my family use it as their main phone. And it works just as well as before. If you already have an iPhone 13 or even an iPhone 12, you might want to wait before upgrading.
