This event which is being organized under the sub-theme, “Zero Waste for a Sustainable City is part of an initiatives to commemorate this year’s World Cities Day.
The move also emanates from GAYO’s Sustainable Community Project which seeks to empower communities with sustainable solutions to achieve a resilient city.
World Cities Day is celebrated every year on 31st October to raise awareness on sustainable urbanization. The theme for the World Cities Day 2021 is: ‘Adapting Cities for Climate Resilience’.
The theme reflects the fact that climate change will have a huge impact on city residents with hundreds of millions of them experiencing floods, rising sea levels, storms, and increasing periods of extreme temperatures.
The much-anticipated event would be staged at the Omanye Aba Hall of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) on Thursday, October 28, 2021 between 10:30 to 13:30 GMT.
It would also witness the launch the Accra Zero Waste Strategy Document that would serve as a guide for effective waste management in communities while showcasing the support to the informal waste workers as agents for climate resilience.
The event is expected to be joined by different actors including, Solid Waste Management Services, Ministries, Local Government Representatives, Community Leaders, private-sector workers, Health Care Practitioners, Non-Governmental Organizations, and Civil Society Organisations.
It is also expected to help promote partnership for the Sustainable Development Goals and hence increase awareness of climate change adaptation, urban resilience, and zero waste solutions.
The event is being supported by the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources, Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, Joy FM, GHOne and Citi News.
