Universities without GTEC’s approval will be rejected for national service – NSA Boss

Felix Gyamfi, the Director-General of the National Service Authority (NSA) has revealed that partnership are currently being developed with the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to eliminate corruption activities such as ‘Ghost names’ at the NSA. Mr. Gyamfi discussed that from now GTEC will be authorized to approve and confirm certifications of universities tboth public and private before graduates for which they will be accepted for national service.
Until now, this measure, he highlighted that some universities which do not exist or do not have certification are accepted into the NSA system without require approval from GTEC, resulting in ‘Ghost names’established to misappropriate public funds.
During an interview on TV3’s Hot Issues, Sunday, June 15, 2025, he drew to attention universities which are not approved by GTEC will not be permitted for national service. “From now we are going to be very transparent about it. Whereas in the past they had not involved GTEC to approve the list of the universities and all that.”
He sated that “I have sent every list of schools that we have received including the private people to GTEC. If GTEC says you are not in the list of their accredited universities, there’s no way you will be allowed to do national service either as a school or individual and then I will make the list available in the coming days.”
Mr. Felix Gyamfi disclosed that by means of approval process by GTEC, 50 unaccredited schools have been pinpointed which had been in given approval in the past for national service.
He disclosed that “Already the GTEC approval process has mentioned or identified about 50 schools that will not be allowed to do national service. The reason is either their accreditation has expired. For about 18 of them, they have never had accreditation at all but in the past, they were doing national service.”
Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Friday, June 13, 2025, Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, revealed that over GH¢8.2 million was paid into a personal Ezwich account belonging to the former Director General of the National Service Authority (NSA), Mr. Osei-Assibey Antwi.
This information was disclosed after investigations into the ‘Ghost names’ scandal which has been a persistent issue involving claims of payments made to non-existent service personnel, resulting substantial financial losses for the state.
Ayine said that “A total of eight million, two hundred and fifty-six thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢8,256,000.00) was deposited into Ezwich account number 1177042059, which is registered in the name of suspect Osei-Assibey. During a search at his residence, the Ezwich card linked to the account was found.” The investigations captured 12 suspects including significant past officials linked to illicit dealings.
