The cost of Hajj under NPP Govt disheartening- Mahama
John Dramani Mahama
The flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has described the increasing cost of Hajj pilgrimage under the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration as disheartening.
In a Facebook post, Mr. Mahama lamented the fact that the cost of Hajj has become a significant financial burden, making it difficult for many regular Muslims to embark on this spiritual journey.
According to Mr. Mahama, who was President from 2012 to 2017, the cost of Hajj during his tenure was significantly more affordable for the Muslim community in Ghana.
“During my time as President, Hajj fares were much more affordable at GH¢11,900.00. Seeing the cost rise to GH¢75,000.00 is disheartening, leaving many with no option but to seek alternative routes for their pilgrimage”. Mahama said in his Facebook page

He added, “Earlier today, when I joined the Ahlussuna Wal-Jamah group for their Eid prayers, I stated that when given the opportunity to lead our country once again, I will not only work tirelessly but also strategically to make the Hajj pilgrimage more affordable for the Ghanaian Muslim community, ensuring that no one is left behind.”
Mr. Mahama emphasized that he understands the significance of the Hajj pilgrimage and its importance in the lives of Muslims worldwide.
He highlighted that as President, he will not only work tirelessly but also strategically to make the Hajj pilgrimage more accessible and affordable for Ghanaian Muslims. His promise is clear: no one should be left behind.
The former President’s statement has sparked heated debate among Ghanaians, with many calling for government intervention to address the issue. The rising cost of Hajj has been attributed to various factors, including inflation, exchange rates, and increased demand.
However, many argue that these factors do not justify the astronomical increase in fares.
As Ghana’s Muslim community prepares to celebrate Eid al-Adha, Mr. Mahama’s words serve as a timely reminder of the need for government action. The NDC flag bearer’s commitment to making Hajj more affordable is music to the ears of many Muslims who have been priced out of this sacred journey.
In conclusion, Mr. Mahama’s call for action resonates with many Ghanaians who believe that the rising cost of Hajj is a pressing issue that requires immediate attention. As we celebrate Eid al-Adha and look forward to better times ahead, we can only hope that our leaders will take concrete steps to address this challenge and make Hajj more accessible and affordable for all Ghanaians.
