Telecel Digitech Academy Trains 700 Students in Coding, Computer Programming
Ghanaian students learn coding and robotics
After twelve weeks of massive and gaining a practical training on coding, robotics, website designing and computer programming, where 700 students from 38 schools from six regions have attained completion status on their training as part of the Telecel Digitech Academy.
The Telecel Ghana Foundation initiative, in collaboration with Mingo Foundation and Asustem Robotics, runs simultaneously with Ghana Education Services (GES) curriculum thoroghout the entire academic term, with the goal of preparing Ghanaian students in junior high school with hands-on tech expertise.
Designated schools in Greater Accra, Volta, Ashanti, North East, Bono East, and Western Regions gained from the tech training as experienced facilitators led practical training sessions after school hours each week, to enhance their skills for solution development devices that solve everyday challenges.
During the regional closing ceremonies, students presented their project outcomes, including smart waste management systems, automated rail gates, smart spectacles for the visually impaired, and automated height-recording systems alongside innovative water conservation technologies.
Speaking at the Greater Accra regional closing ceremony for the initial group from the Archbishop Andoh R/C and Community 8 No.3 schools in Tema, Dr Stella Agyenim-Boateng, a Board member of the Telecel Ghana Foundation, stated that the Academy showed the Foundation’s dedication to preparing the next generation with important skills for a Innovation driven-future, technology, and transformation.
The Tema Metropolitan Director of Education, Mrs Bernice Ofori, praised the Telecel Digitech Academy, especially for dealing with the existing gender imbalance issues in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields.
Mrs Bernice Ofori stated that “The well-structured approach engaged our young learners in hands-on activities which supplemented our traditional classroom learning. The Telecel Digitech Academy is a real game changer for inclusivity by empowering our youth in the digital economy and ensuring that 70 per cent of the learners are girls, addressing the gender gap in the field.”
Rita Agyeiwaa Rockson, the Head of Foundation, Sustainability and External Communications at Telecel Ghana, said the initiative is specifically aim at the bringing the digital gap thorough the provision of young Ghanaians with access to training in emerging technologies.
Rita Agyeiwaa Rockson expressed that “Ghanaian children shouldn’t be any different from others in developed nations with regards to STEM education and careers. Travelling across the six regions over the last month, I have seen incredible talents and capabilities of young people. Once we give them the opportunity and resources, they can excel in any field.”
