Otec FM Retracts and Apologizes to Professor Ellis Owusu-Dabo over False publication

Professor Ellis Owusu-Dabo of KNUST nearly got into a legal battle with OTEC FM and The Ghanaian Observer for allegedly publishing false and defamatory information about him.
The two media houses accused the Professor of scheming to prevent the extension of the current Vice Chancellor’s tenure to advance his own ambitions of becoming KNUST’s Vice Chancellor.
These media reports prompted stern legal actions from Professor Owusu-Dabo’s legal team, O&A Legal Consult.
The O&A Legal Consult explained that the accusations from these media reports were not only false but also tarnished their client’s reputation and can affect the healthy relationship he has with his boss, Prof. Rita Dickson who is currently KNUST’s Vice Chancellor.
The letters signed by lawyer Kwasi Afrifa ESQ, on behalf of O&A Legal Consult, demanded immediate retractions and apologies from both media houses.
The legal team in its letter particularly called out Presenter John Antwi Boasiako of OTEC FM and alleged collaboration with Michael Owusu-Afriyie of The Ghanaian Observer to defame Professor Owusu-Dabo of KNUST.
The legal team stated emphatically that failure to retract and render an apology to the Professor within 7 days could lead to legal consequences, stating the tensions in university politics and media’s impact on public figures.
In a blog post cited by Newsghana24.com on Otec FM’s website today, OTEC FM has retracted its allegations about Professor Ellis Owusu-Dabo and has issued an apology:
“The Management of OTEC FM renders an unqualified apology for the article published on June 15, 2024, involving Professor Ellis Owusu-Dabo, the Pro Vice-Chancellor of KNUST. Our investigation revealed that the story was not true and misleading. We retract the article and apologize to Professor Ellis Owusu-Dabo for any harm or damage caused. We unreservedly retract the claims and apologize for any emotional, social, and public damage caused. We strive for reliable information and regret any inconvenience caused.”
We hope the Ghaianian Observer would also retract its statement against Professor Ellis Owusu-Dabo and render an unqualified apology to pacify him.
The case of Professor Ellis Owusu-Dabo, Otec FM and the Ghanaian Observer exemplifies the importance of accurate journalism and the potential consequences of unfounded allegations.
The outcome of this case may set a pace for media accountability and the handling of university governance disputes.
