Organised labour suspends its planned strike
Organised labour has suspended its intended nationwide strike action, which was expected to commence on Thursday, 10, 2024.
The rationale is that, Organised Labour is now pleased with government’s enhanced measures to combat the menace of illegal mining known as “galamsey”.
This move following a meeting between government, organised labour leaders and the Ghana Employers Association on Tuesday, October 8, 2024.
The strike was to put pressure on the government to address their demands to abandon illegal mining, destruction of water bodies and forest reserves.
The Secretary General of the Trade Union Congress ( TUC), Joshua Ansah, announced the suspension of the strike on Wednesday, October 9 at a press conference where he said that the concessions made by the government was “significant “ to the demands of organised labour.

In related news; the organised labour’s decision to embark on nationwide strike was opposed by some associations.
On Tuesday, October 8, 2024, the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) declared that its members will not participate in the nationwide strike action declared by Organised Labour in protest against illegal mining (galamsey) but expressed its support for the cause.

Also, on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) announced that it will not partake in the nationwide anti-galamsey strike declared by organised labour on October 10, 2024.
“ The meeting resolved that the measures announced by government were not adequate in addressing our demands and stopping the dangers posed by illegal mining.
We, therefore, affirmed the strike notice and informed the Government accordingly.
“ The meeting discussed at length Organised Labours’ response to the earlier measures announced by Government.
Following this meeting, government offered enhanced and time-bound measures in respect of our demands and the fight against illegal mining, “ part of the statement read.
All members are therefore entrusted to report to work on October 10 and beyond while the union keep on to monitor the government’s implementation of the proposed policies.
