I won’t be part of this year’s Independence Day celebration-John Dramani Mahama
Former president John Dramani Mahama has expressed profound disaffection towards the commemoration of Ghana’s 66th Independence Day celebration saying that he is distancing himself away from it and simply in no way having anything to do with marking the historic day.
According to him, the Akuffo-Addo led government in power has hijacked and finally altered the once solemn occasion widely enjoyed by all Ghanaians in the past into a party jamboree in recent time, which is a nuisance and even goes contrary to the ideals of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
“Independence is a solemn national celebration. We used to celebrate it at the Independence square and everybody who wanted to come could come. Today, they bus their supporters in, they have party flags, they wear party t-shirts”.
“I don’t want to be part of a party jamboree. Nkrumah got us independence, I’m an Nkrumaist. I will attend Independence Day, any day, if it’s not hijacked by one party. Because it should be a national day for all of us. So, I’m not going to be in Ho tomorrow because I don’t want to be part of an NPP Jamboree.”, he posited.
Former President John Mahama made this known while delivering an address at the 5th Anniversary Dinner and Awards Night of the NDC Professionals Forum
The colorful event was graced by members of the NDC Professionals Forum and a tall lists of party bigwigs, faithfuls and parliamentarians alike including Prof. Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, General Secretary of NDC, Totobi Kwakye, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, former National Chairman of the NDC.
Ghana will today, March 6, 2023, mark its 66th Independence Day at Ho, the Volta Regional Capital.
The event will be co-hosted with the Adaklu District at the Volta Regional Youth Resource Centre at Adaklu. This year’s event is on the theme: Our Unity, Our Strength, Our Purpose.
The memorable event will be graced by the President Sissoco Embalo of Guinea Bissau, who is also the Chairman of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
This is the first time Volta Region is hosting the national independence parade which commemorates the Day Ghana formally weaned itself from British colonial rule.
