The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has reaffirmed its call to secure a dedicated funding stream to support pre-tertiary education in the country.
In the face of the ongoing uncertainty about the financing of the education system of Ghana, specifically the government’s official clearance of about GHC 31.7 billion to finance the operation of the Ministry of Education for the current year 2025.
In an interview with Citi News on April 1, The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) General Secretary Thomas Tanko Musah emphasized the importance of the government’s commitment to funding pre-tertiary education because it’s very important for addressing educational financing challenges. He encouraged the government to back away from a discrete initiatives to funding education and rather introduce long-term funding strategy.
“We need a specialized funding source. This is not the only item that we have in the education sector. We are faced with the problem of school feeding and all other related matters. How do we intend to fund all those things? It is a good thing that the GETFund has been uncapped, but we want to see the allocation that will be made to get these things done.”
Thomas Tanko Musah declared that “We must agree and decide on financing and funding our educational expenditures. Additionally, we must have a dedicated and consistent source of supply for resources. This will help promote sustainability and effective management of our educational programs. This is going to enable us to provide quality education while maintaining fiscal responsibility and stability. A reliable funding mechanism is crucial for achieving our educational goals.”
