Ghana secures historic spot at World Athletics Championships
Ghana’s men’s 4x100m relay team have made a stunning start at this year’s World Athletics Championships in Tokyo after recording a top performance this season of 38.32 seconds at the 2025 World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China — establishing themselves at global stage with style and steely resolve.
In a thrilling second day of the competition, the dynamic quartet of Barnabas Aggerh, Joseph Paul Amoah, Mustapha Alufar Bokpin, and Ibrahim Fuseini – running in that order –sprinted to a strong second place finish, just one-hundredth of a second behind France (38.31s) in their heat Sunday. The outcome guaranteed their spot at the Tokyo championships this September. The outcome brought a wave of joy among the Ghanaian camp.
demonstrated a significant improvement after Ghana had missed out on automatic qualification last Saturday. In their first outing, the team — then consisting of Fuseini, Aggerh, veteran Sean Safo-Antwi, and Bokpin — completed the third behind Great Britain & Northern Ireland and Poland in 38.49 seconds.
That performance wasn’t quite good enough to secure a spot in World Relays final, which saw South Africa pull off a shocking turn of events to beat the USA and Canada to gold. However, their initial performance gave Ghana a second shot at redemption, and they took full advantage of it.
Head coach and officials made a bold change, bringing in national 200m record-holder Joseph Paul Amoah to replace Sarfo Antwi. The decision worked out spectacularly, as the team produced an impressive performance to prove doubters wrong.
Regardless another nervy baton exchange, a persistent problem for Ghanaian relay teams over the years, it was Ibrahim Fuseini’s electrifying final leg made all the difference , overtaking competitors in a thrilling finale.
The Ghana Olympic Committee reacted immediately in celebrating the team’s triumph, calling it a “remarkable achievement” and a source of inspiration for the country’s sporting future.
As per a statement, Richard Akpokavie, the GOC President, commended their commitment, discipline, and hard-work towards the 4x100m heat, saying their performance showcased exceptional skill that Ghana possessed.
Richard Akpokavie said that “It is our hope that this is just the beginning of many more accomplishments that will put Ghana in the medal zone of global competitions.”
As the team celebrate their groundbreaking achievement ,they are still training because there are more work to be done. Baton challenge have plagued Ghana’s relay efforts at several major championships — from the Olympics to the African Games — and technical attention will make all the difference if this group is to convert promise into podium finishes in Tokyo.
