Ghana-Nigeria cyber-fraud network scams over 200 victims, stealing $400,000 through online schemes

Ghanaian authorities have taken down a major cyber-fraud group that was operating across Ghana and Nigeria that scammed over than 200 victims of over $400,000. This is part of a large-scale online scam across the continent which is coordinated by INTERPOL.
During the Operation Sentinel, the network was uncovered and it was focused on business email compromise, digital extortion and ransomware activities which was also identified as rising dangers in the 2025 Africa INTERPOL Cyber Threat Assessment Report.
The investigators said The group relied on polished, professional-looking websites and mobile applications to impersonate popular fast-food chains, collecting online payments from People who didn’t suspect anything but failing to deliver any orders.
INTERPOL confirmed that ten suspects were arrested in Ghana who were involved in the fraudulent activity. Again, more than 100 digital devices were collected during targeted crackdowns.
Authorities removed 30 fake servers from operation who used to facilitate the scam. The Ghana-Nigeria network was one of many major cases revealed during the operation. This resulted in 574 arrests across Africa, removal of over 6,000 dangerous web links and the decryption of six ransomware variants.
The operation brought to light on how cybercriminals are taking greater advantage of consumer trust in familiar brands to defraud people on a large scale across borders, making it tough for authorities to respond. Neal Jetton, who is the Director of Cybercrime of INTERPOL, said the operation showed the value of international cooperation in tackling cyber-enabled crime.
Neal Jetton stated “The scale and sophistication of cyberattacks across Africa are accelerating, especially against critical sectors like finance and energy. The outcomes from Operation Sentinel reflect the commitment of African law enforcement agencies, working in close coordination with international partners. Their actions have successfully protected livelihoods, secured sensitive personal data and preserved critical infrastructure.”
